And that is experiential education. When practicing that, time is no object. I have done six day, four day, two day, one day, four hour and shorter trainings. I try to practice the things we know from the brain research. For shorter presentations I change things up making a new point every ten minutes connecting points with an activity or story that provides the appropriate emotional response then providing review every 90 to 120 minutes. Those techniques have been shown through research to increase learning and retention significantly. When I say activity, I usually mean something physical. Thats why I mentioned elbow room above (dont need a lot, but need some). My presentations address a number of different things: Experiential learning Behavior management Building classroom learning communities De-escalation technique Physical safety (when a student is physically aggressive) Counseling technique Effective activity sequencing Games for learning and effective activity debrief to maximize learning I have also taught entire semester courses on a variety of subjects for counselors and psychologists Given the parameters (group size, time allotted, facility size and make-up, and desired outcome) I tailor the presentation. Here is a description from a 9 hour class I taught last fall: Major Topics to Be Covered Learn and experience how to build a strong learning community within any classroom around the following topics: experiential education, academic risk-taking, challenge by choice, full value contract, group and role development in the classroom. Gain an understanding of the art of facilitation of a group including the use of the adventure wave, group assessment, activity adjustment, activity sequencing, framing (briefing), processing (debriefing), and safety considerations. Design a learning communities sequence that can be used in the classrooms integrating learning communities activities and concepts into current curriculum. Course Objectives Learn how to build a strong learning community within any classroom Gain an understanding of the art of facilitation of a group Learn how to design a learning communities sequence integrating learning communities activities and concepts into current curriculum. Here is a description of a 4 hour workshop I conducted last month: Major Topics to Be Covered Learn and experience how to respond in difficult situations with students and adults at school (and elsewhere). Course Objectives Learn three guiding principles to follow Learn how to assess when you are in you optimal performance range Learn de-escalation techniques Learn how to set up your environment to prevent escalation Learn how to adjust your own behavior to prevent escalation Learn how to evaluate and adapt the environment to set yourself and others up for success Course description from a full day workshop co-presented at the Association for Experiential Education Northwest Regional Conference last year: Workshop Description: Building Successful Learning Communities (BSLC) is a Washington State University (WSU) Extension training program that brings the research and best practices of the experiential learning model into the classroom. The BSLC program is targeted at Educators who want to acquire the knowledge and skill needed to transform their classrooms into dynamic, high achieving learning communities. This program spans across curriculum, grade levels, and programs, establishing a scaffolding to support educators, resulting in increased student performance and decreased disruptive behaviors. Participants have the opportunity to experience best practices, learn the latest research, and understand the theory behind it. The learning objectives are to experience key elements of a successful learning community, gain new tools and techniques for teaching and learning, understand current trends in educational research, and create an implementation plan for new ideas. Join us for a jam-packed session that is sure to re-ignite your passion for teaching.
