Team Building/Communication Lego Lesson Plan (Based on presentation by Peggy Haecker and her assistant)
Focus Group: 7 Up – Freshman Advisory group and their parents
Purpose:
Highlight how important communication is between all entities
- analyzers, runners, and builders
- students, parents, and advisor
Introduce communication expectations of the 7 Up group in a fun way
Materials:
- Lego building sets and extra pieces
- Something to conceal completed Lego figure
- Masking tape
Set Up:
Build two Lego figures. Place two tables at one end of the room and two tables at the other end of the room. Put a line with masking tape on the floor approximately two feet from the front of the tables. Conceal the Lego figures with a box or screen of some sort on two of the tables at the same end of the room.
Process:
- Introduce concept of increased communication as a purpose of advisory
- Divide group into two teams
- Have each team choose an equal number of analyzers, runners, and builders
- Explain activity – analyzers can talk to each other and the runners. Runners can talk to analyzers and builders but only after they cross the tape line on the floor. Runners cannot touch the Lego pieces on the builder tables
- Explain Goal: To be the first group to build an identical figure to the one that is on the analyzers table
- Set time limit if necessary
Wrap up:
Discussion: What were some of the communication problems? Why did those problems occur? What were problems from different perspectives: analyzer, runner, and builder? Relate discussion to school and the communications that should be happening between student, parent, and advisor.
