As an elementary physical education teacher at Sunset View Elementary School (Kennewick School District, Kennewick, WA) Paul demonstrates his commitment to teaching his students WHY health and physical fitness are life skills. One might think that a kindergartener might not be the target market for such a lesson, but seeing those kindergarteners as fifth graders and hearing them talk about the importance of a good breakfast or being able to climb on the rock wall you know that his message is making an impression. His philosophy is to teach to the cognitive level of the grade, make sure the kids have fun and keep them all moving and participating. No children WAIT for their turn to play.

Paul has changed the philosophy of “fund raising” and “special events” at his school from pop and candy to fitness and challenge. For the third year in a row his school is in the top three of Jump Rope for Heart schools in the state of Washington (an American Heart Association event) raising close to $18,000 a year. For this effort his kids are rewarded with new PE equipment for the school. He also managed the first JOG- A-THON to raise money for the schools PTO and the new playground equipment…the event raised over $15,000. It is obvious that his students “love” him and try all the new activities he sponsors.

His “active life” philosophy is evident is non-class activities as well. During the spring, Paul had a series of FUN RUNS where all the elementary schools in the district are invited to send children. PTO volunteers help manage the event and all participants get ribbons. He has developed a MILEAGE CLUB where any children who want come out at lunch to run or walk and earn mileage tokens. PTO volunteers help manage the event. At the end of the year the class with most miles (tokens) wins a pizza party paid for by the PTO. Beside that reward, any child who completes 25 miles is then invited to the TRI CITY MARATHON to complete 1.6 miles and the marathon. Paul’s philosophy of getting parents involved with these events is evident when many parents join the kids at lunch and walk/run with the mileage club.

Paul serves as a member of the School Districts Instructional Council, the District Benefits committee and was member of the committee that proposed to the district to remove pop machines from the schools. He is committed to his profession and serves on the Washington Alliance for Health, PE, Recreation and Dance. This term he represents the health division, but has been president twice and Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart representative. Currently, he is a candidate for the National Board Teaching Certification.
