Tools for Teaching Content Literacy
This session will present research-based strategies and practices to support, motivate, and engage all learners in reading and writing. These practices will help students overcome the challenges faced in content reading and writing, especially those who are English learners and/or struggling readers or writers.
Mary Borba is an Associate Professor in the Teacher Education Department at. CSU Stanislaus. She is passionate about helping K-12 teachers build literacy skills for struggling readers and English learners. Her speaking engagements at state, national and international conferences include the International Reading Association in Dublin, Ireland. Prior to CSUS, Dr. Borba was a teacher, principal and a Reading Recovery teacher leader.
Learning, Leading and Teaching in the 21st Century
We live in unprecedented times where information doubles every six months, textbooks are obsolete before the ink dries, access to social networks that share relevant information are the rule of the day, and the apparatus for teaching and learning is based upon an industrial business model that is no longer effective. We exist in a “knowledge society” which requires new skills for work, continuous learning, and citizenship for all students. Without these skills, students are relegated to marginal employment and citizenship. Additionally, the “Net Generation” is differently motivated to learn, and boredom is the leading cause of low achievement and student dropouts. This session will explore the challenges and opportunities we have as educators to reinvent education in order to prepare our students for the 21st Century.
This is Eric Prater’s first year as superintendent of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Prior to coming to San Luis Coastal, Dr. Prater had been with the Byron Union School District as superintendent. Prior to Byron, he was in the Brentwood Union School District. Eric is a graduate of the University of LaVerne where he received his doctorate in Organizational Leadership.

Why Wellness Options Are Relevant
- National health epidemic!
- NEA magazine claims the leading health issue for female teachers is heart disease - stress.
- Teachers operate at top performance levels when they are healthy and content.
- Teachers modeling wellness for our next generation is important.
- School districts save money with healthy teachers.
What Research Has to Say About Self-Esteem
This session reviews over 1,000 studies related to self-esteem: crime and violence, school dropouts, vandalism, teenage pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, eating disorders, and gang activity. Factors that either destroy or enhance self-esteem will be identified and effective strategies demonstrated.
A former superintendent in San Jose, California, Robert Reasoner is founder of the International Council for Self-Esteem, 234 Montgomery Lane, Port Ludlow, WA 98365.
Five Things English Learners Need for Classroom Success
Teachers in classrooms across the country are eager to locate successful strategies that will enable their ever-increasing language diverse student population to grasp content instruction. Within any classroom, there may be multiple languages and a wide array of proficiencies, which makes grouping very challenging. Using a structured grouping platform may be just what teachers at any level need to get content across to students. Opportunities for listening, speaking, reading, writing and making connections through language are achieved through research-based classroom centers that open doors for all English learners.
Christopher Roe has been an educator for 30 years. He has taught various grades at the elementary level both in the Central Valley and Bay Area communities in California. Additionally, he served as administrator for 13 years in the schools and at the county level. Presently, he is an Assistant Professor at CSU Stanislaus. His areas of instruction are elementary social studies, reading and classroom management as well as graduate courses for the Masters in Curriculum and Instruction program. His research areas include English learner success, teacher preparation programs and multicultural emphasis in the classroom.
PLC Peer Groups
How often do you get to share and absorb successful teaching practices, in specific subjects, with your peers through Professional Learning Communities (PLC)? Now, you can! Summer Institutes has facilitated popular PLCs since 1987! PLC peer group horizontal and vertical sessions will be included in the weekly schedule.

Tying Together Curriculum and Technology
CIM Tech Solutions, www.cimtechsolutions.com
Being engaged in the classroom is one of the keys to deep learning. Come spend some time to focus on how and why we use technology to enhance delivery and assessment of curriculum. The session will discuss the paradigm shift teachers and districts are making when choosing technology tools to assist in the delivery of content and will also explore how Mobi's and eInstruction Classroom Response Systems can be used to help with classroom management and delivery of curriculum. See examples of how using these tools can help teachers to actively engage all students in classrooms with ever increasing numbers, check student understanding throughout a lesson, provide on-going real-time feedback during lessons, differentiate instruction based on student understanding, and efficiently assess and record student knowledge. See examples of how teachers can use these tools to make learning visible and take learning to a deeper level using quality questioning strategies during instruction.
Dottie Coven has a Masters in Teaching and taught elementary school for 13 years. She has worked as a consultant and technology trainer since 1992 and joined CIM Technology Solutions Group as they expanded into the Western Region in 2007.
