"Managing Conflict"
Even though we cannot change others, we are not powerless in the face of conflict. This course integrates recent research on conflict and examines constructive conflict management from a communication perspective. Participants will gain an understanding of conflict theory, causes, patterns, and tactics, as well as develop the skills needed to engage in productive conflict resolution.
Colleen M. Klatt, Ph.D., T.T.S., is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Language, Literature, and Communication at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY), Executive Director of Grants and Research at Castleton State College (Castleton, VT), and an Adjunct Professor of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication at Concordia University-St. Paul (St. Paul, MN). Dr. Klatt's research focuses broadly on health communication transactions, message design elements, attitude change and behavior modification. While Associate Research Director in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota she managed a $10M research portfolio featuring NIH and foundation funded projects for national smoking cessation interventions. She has 12 years of experience teaching courses in the areas of health communication, social marketing, organizational communication, persuasion, research methods, and interpersonal communication. In addition to her teaching and research experience, Dr. Klatt also has more than 10 years of experience working in public relations, corporate communications, corporate and non-profit management, and hospital-based fitness center management. She has served as executive director of a leadership training organization and has nearly 15 years of experience as an organizational consultant specializing in change management, conflict management, leadership development, workplace relationships, and teaching presentation skills to professionals. Dr. Klatt has published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Journal of Medical Internet Research, American Journal of Health Behavior, Journal of American College Health, Preventive Medicine, Nicotine & Tobacco Research, and Nursing Research. In 2009 she published a chapter titled "Pro-social message design: A theoretical model" in an edited book titled Anti-and pro-social communication: Theories, methods & applications. In 2011 she will have a chapter included in Feedback: The handbook of criticism, praise and advice titled "Preparing people for health behavior change in medical and public health settings". Her first book titled Social, political, and marketing tactics of smoking promotion and prevention will be translated into four languages and published in 2011.

Tying Together Curriculum and Technology
Being engaged in the classroom is one of the keys to deep learning. Come spend some time to focus on how and why we use technology to enhance delivery and assessment of curriculum. The session will discuss the paradigm shift teachers and districts are making when choosing technology tools to assist in the delivery of content and will also explore how Mobi's and eInstruction Classroom Response Systems can be used to help with classroom management and delivery of curriculum. See examples of how using these tools can help teachers to actively engage all students in classrooms with ever increasing numbers, check student understanding throughout a lesson, provide on-going real-time feedback during lessons, differentiate instruction based on student understanding, and efficiently assess and record student knowledge. See examples of how teachers can use these tools to make learning visible and take learning to a deeper level using quality questioning strategies during instruction.
Dottie Coven - Dottie has a Masters in Teaching and taught elementary school for 13 years. Dottie has worked as a consultant and technology trainer since 1992 and joined CIM Technology Solutions Group as they expanded into the Western Region in 2007.

This is a great class that actually gives you information you can use in your classroom.
Cory Arts, St. Johns Public Schools
After a rough year I feel inspired and energized. Marci Adams, Howell High School.
I feel so refreshed after the weeklong Summer Institute. The speakers were dynamic, passionate, energetic and knowledgeable. I was overwhelmed by the level of commitment and caring about children that I witnessed in the speakers and participants. Everything about the Summer Institute was rewarding---the format, the philosophy, wellness activities, the speakers and the workshops. I left energized and inspired to make a difference for children!! Martha Abdullah, Holt High School, Ninth Grade Campus.
Awesome class! Michael Keldsen, Kenden, - Gier Park
WOW! What a refreshing break from the ‘everyday experience’ Met great people, heard wonderful speakers. Duff Schad, Waverly East.
Fun, Educational, Affordable and painless. What more could you want? I love this Summer Institute so much that I continue to come every year, even though I don’t need the credits. Try it, you will like it. Deb Fraccalolli, Grand Ledge.
This Institute is summer camp for teachers, and you’ll walk away with strategies you can use in the classroom on the first day of school. Nyla Munk, Forest View Elementary
This class was very uplifting and motivational. The speakers emphasized the importance of relationships between teachers and students. Most of the speakers seemed to truly understand. The challenges teachers face in today’s educational system. The format of the class was a relaxed atmosphere that emphasized camaraderie between staff members from the same districts and brought teachers together from various districts. Catherine Deschenes, Howell High School.
Each June the Summer Institute provides many educators with invigorating blend of inspiration, relaxation and current relevant professional development. Spending a week in this environment is a great way to finish a school year and to begin summer. I’d recommend SI to any educator. Gary Kinzer, Principal, Hiawatha Elementary School.
The Summer Institute offered a wealth of speakers with useful information and concrete ideas which, when put into action will insure student success. Valerie Green, Elmhurst /Bingham/Gier Park, Lansing.
Teachers need to be charged-up not discharged. They need to be built-up not worn down. SI classes will do this. Walk away with a smile, not a frown. Darren Mort, Montrose School.
Although, this is my 4th time taking this class, I always leave with new tools in my educator’ toolbox. I am so excited about Christian Moore that I will plan to attend his training in September! Thanks! Jewell Muller-Gornick, Wilshire Early Childhood Center.
This course is fantastic. It is quick to the point and worthwhile. A great opportunity to get 3 credits at a good price and get needed information. Would recommend this class overwhelmingly. Valerie Duncan, Elmhurst Elementary.
Although I was happy about the course being convenient and over in one week, I hadn’t expected the rejuvenation I got from listening to the speakers. Lynn Garrett.
The SI (Summer Institute) provides current info with interesting presentations. It is motivational, practical, relaxed and rejuvenating. A great way to prepare yourself to go back into the classroom as a better teacher and person. Lynette Pemble, Discovery Elementary

I was so impressed with the Summer Institute within the first hour of my first day during my first time attending, that I knew I wanted to attend again next year! Larisa Ballard, Dwight Rich Middle School.
This class is just what I needed to regroup, get useful information to use in the classroom and “fire up” for the next school year. I had lots of fun while participating in wellness activities and learning from some experienced and well know speakers in the educational field. The speakers were amazing! Cynthia Rea, Highlander Way Middle School.
Want to be respected with reasonable (not superfluous) expectations on professional development in a variety of approaches (not a single crammed class)? Take Dick Comer’s Summer Institute! B. Nabozny, T.A. Wilson Academy, Jackson, Michigan.
