Title: Diversity: More than Just a Word...Culture, Context, and Communication

This training will begin identifying and building a Practical Framework of Skills, Strategies and Methods for teachers and schools respecting Diversity and Multiculturalism. These are critical and essential skills and tools for effectively understanding, engaging and utilizing diversity, as it exists and develops, in our classrooms, schools and communities. This training focuses on personal understanding and making Practical application of concepts, ideas and tools to support implementation.

The changing face of our American society has brought increasing demands on each of us and on our schools and communities. What tools do you have to effectively work with others different than yourself? What skills do we need to meet the demands we face as individuals and organizations?

Effective leadership, awareness of our own contexts and perspectives, understanding of other diverse perspectives, cross-cultural communication and cultural competency skills are key components to positive and productive working relationships with employees and clients alike and necessary in productive, effective working and living environments. Clear definitions of what we mean and what is expected are important. Culture, race, gender and multiculturalism are often used as code words or catchwords, but they are important words employed to describe the richness and challenges represented by or increasing diversity. We often talk about these issues, but we all need to develop practical and effective tools to understand and utilize the increasing diversity, to develop effective communication and interaction skills and to address significant institutional and historic challenges. Our future success depends on how well we develop and utilize practical skills and abilities to understand and address the increasing issues of diversity and change.

Challenge Masters - Gil Chapa & Nancy Nelson

The idea of Experiential Learning was conceived at the turn of the Twentieth Century. John Dewey recognized that learning is a process where students gain insights from their experiences. From his teachings, the philosophy of experiential learning continues to grow. In spite of trends in education, experiential learning has never been abandoned. Rather, it has been nurtured and developed by leaders in learning: David Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle, Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, and Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence.

It is current brain research that recognizes experiential education's impact on learning. In his book Learning with the Body in Mind, Eric Jensen reports, "Researchers know that 'play' plays an integral role in learning." He cites adventure play, non-competitive group play and exercise play as recommended programs. In Super Teaching, he further states, "Recent findings in brain research have validated the use of many types of games which were previously dismissed as play." Those findings recognize the importance of emotions, body memory, low threat and high challenge exercise. Play embodies each of those elements.

Most recent research points specifically to adventure education: Adventure Education has lasting impact on the social-emotional development of students.

 Bullies are people, too!

In this thought-provoking and interactive presentation you will discover the surprising definition of bullying, what we all have in common with bullies and how current school practices and policies actually encourage this behavior. Alex has been implementing the principles and practices of Intentional Communication and Dynamic Governance to support social and emotional intelligence in schools as a radical (literally, root) approach to rewiring the power structures and attitudes that model and support bullying in the first place.

Tying Together Curriculum and Technology

Being engaged in the classroom is one of the keys to deep learning. Come spend some time to focus on how and why we use technology to enhance delivery and assessment of curriculum. The session will discuss the paradigm shift teachers and districts are making when choosing technology tools to assist in the delivery of content and will also explore how Mobi's and eInstruction Classroom Response Systems can be used to help with classroom management and delivery of curriculum. See examples of how using these tools can help teachers to actively engage all students in classrooms with ever increasing numbers, check student understanding throughout a lesson, provide on-going real-time feedback during lessons, differentiate instruction based on student understanding, and efficiently assess and record student knowledge. See examples of how teachers can use these tools to make learning visible and take learning to a deeper level using quality questioning strategies during instruction.
