KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS That Address Today’s Standards

WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS BY EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELDS

A full day with Martin Fleming, “Getting to Respect: Making your classroom a safe place for all” from Manson, Washington.  Mr. Fleming is the director of For KidSake, a training and consultation company focused on helping educators and caregivers of young people. He has conducted workshops and seminars in 43 States and Canada and appeared in many guest spots in regional and national media, such as The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel, National Public Radio, and CNN.  He is the author of 10 books and was recently voted “best presenter” at a large national conference and strives to give people practical, effective strategies for helping kids in a humorous and engaging manner.

Christian Moore presents “Why Try? Overcoming poverty, violence, and failure” and “Why Try? New Approaches for Hard-to-Reach Youth.”  Mr. Moore is the author of the WhyTry Program, now in approximately 3,000 schools throughout the U.S, Canada, and Australia.  He has years of experience working with at-risk youth, including work as a school social worker at an alternative high school, and as a youth outpatient therapist at a community mental health agency specializing in adolescents with conduct disorder and learning disabilities. Mr. Moore’s presentation will include activities that help all attendees gain personal insight into the challenges youth face and will explore the seeds of motivation and hope which enable children to overcome poverty, violence, and failure.

 Educational Field-Trip Based Learning

EXCITING OPTIONS!

Helfrich Outfitter
You'll be joining Helfrich Outfitter on a full-day rafting trip on the beautiful McKenzie River. We will be rafting from Hamlin to Helfrich boat landings, a 15.5-mile trip. This is the most popular stretch of the McKenzie. It starts with a roller-coaster-like rapid. Then, there's time to get used to sitting on the raft and to feel how it moves on the water and in the rapids, and to get used to team paddling. Our first test comes within a mile at Redside Rapid, a straight shot through some fantastic breaking waves and a hydraulic. A few miles and many rapids later, we get into another wet, wild ride, Riverside Rapid, a long series of big breaking waves, followed by two similar rapids. Then, it's lunch with a special guest who will make an educational presentation. Most of the biggest rapids follow. By then, we're paddling well as a team. We maneuver through several rapids, most notably Bear Creek Rapids, Brown's Hole and Marten's, dodging rocks and crashing waves like veterans. An area photographer frequently comes out to record our adventure at this point. Our Helfrich Landing take-out is then only minutes away. Join your colleagues for a fun, educational day on the river!
* Additional $55 dollar fee to participate.  Wear clothing and footwear that can get wet.  Pack your lunch, water, sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.  Bring along a change of dry clothes and shoes.

BRING Recycling
Come see the Planet Improvement Center. BRING's new site in Glenwood, where green living comes to life!  BRING is an educational non-profit that has promoted a healthy and sustainable enviornment through its work for over 35 years.  Our new site is a shining example of how planet saving can be fun!  For example, our parking lot catches rainwater and runs it through a clean, cooling bioswale.  Our office is a retroffitted building topped with a green roof.  Objects crafted from used materials that inspire and surprise and run from from funky to functional are installed indoors and out!
