Title: PURE Teaching VI (Powerfully Using Relationships Effectively)
This is the 6th installment of P.U.R.E. Teaching. This year’s seminar will focus on relationships with students and colleagues and how to interact in ways that increase mutual understanding, promote cooperation, and decrease conflict. We will also discuss lessons on motivation, choice making and goal setting. These lessons are currently being taught by Mr. Chapin to educators in seminars across the United States through Bureau of Education & Research, Rachel’s Challenge, and through Mr. Chapin’s business, Positive Powerful Teaching. He is also teaching these lessons to students of all grades at various school districts and the Juvenile Justice Center.
This year’s presentation will include the following:
- Basic attitude and behavior lessons for elementary school students.
- Classroom proven strategies for increasing academic performance and establishing mutual respect between you and your students.
- Highly effective methods for improving students’ attitudes about school, life, and learning.
- Practical methods to empower students to accept personal responsibility for what happens to them in school and in life.
- Student friendly ideas that prevent power struggles, apathy, and classroom disruptions.
- Where to find energy in teaching and how to plug the holes that drain that energy.
- Goal setting and problem solving for both the teacher and the student.
We will cover these and many other topics as well as receiving a packet containing some of these lessons and other useful information.

Planning for the Worst: Crisis That Threaten Your schools Reputation
One of your staffers has been accused of sexual harassment…a teacher is arrested for (fill in the blank)…a Repository reporter wants a quote about a rumor damaging to your school…your auditor just discovered evidence a longtime employee embezzled funds…a child takes his own life – and a parent holds you responsible…you get wind of a sexting situation
These are just a few of the headlines ripped from the front pages of Ohio's daily newspapers - and amplified exponentially by Facebook and Twitter - where the finger has been pointed at educational institutions.
In today’s world of “gotcha” journalism and tiny, digital cameras capable of sending hi-definition pictures to YouTube and CNN within minutes, “crisis communications” has emerged as a separate sub discipline of public relations.
This fast-paced talk by veteran crisis communications and media specialist Bruce Hennes will focus on a highly-strategic approach to communicating during a wide variety of crisis situations, offering numerous methods for establishing and maintaining “control of the message,” enabling you to mount a defense against a sudden press onslaught, and protecting the good name of your school.
Speaker: Bruce M. Hennes, Managing Partner of Hennes Paynter Communications. Hennes Paynter is the only agency in Ohio focused exclusively on crisis communications – and one of the few firms in the U.S. with that singular specialty. Serving educational institutions, nonprofits, corporations and government agencies that are “on trial” in the court of public opinion, Hennes Paynter Communications also offers media training and litigation communication support to their clients.
Hennes has over 30 years experience working in politics and public relations. He now counts among his current and former clients such companies as John Carroll University, Cuyahoga Community College, Hathaway Brown, Hawken, Bedford and Mentor Public Schools, St. Joseph Academy, St. Ignatius, Akron General Health System, MetroHealth, The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, KeyBank, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, Case Western Reserve University, NASA and Westfield Insurance.
Hennes serves on the governing board of the Cleveland Leadership Center and The Business Emergency Planning Institute. He is one of the founders of the FBI Citizens Academy Foundation of Cleveland. He is also a Graduate Lecturer in Advanced Communications/Media Relations in the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University and he frequently speaks before bar and trade associations. Hennes is also a member of the boards of The Press Club of Cleveland, Cleveland Jewish News and The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and recipient of the bar association’s first-ever President’s Award. Hennes recently received certification in Effective Communications from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and The Federal Emergency Management Agency. President of Leadership Cleveland’s Class of 2008, Hennes is also of counsel to Levick Strategic Communications in Washington, DC. (2007 Crisis Manager of the Year and 2007 Litigation Communications Firm of the Year by PRNews).

Tying Together Curriculum and Technology
Being engaged in the classroom is one of the keys to deep learning. Come spend some time to focus on how and why we use technology to enhance delivery and assessment of curriculum. The session will discuss the paradigm shift teachers and districts are making when choosing technology tools to assist in the delivery of content and will also explore how Mobi's and eInstruction Classroom Response Systems can be used to help with classroom management and delivery of curriculum. See examples of how using these tools can help teachers to actively engage all students in classrooms with ever increasing numbers, check student understanding throughout a lesson, provide on-going real-time feedback during lessons, differentiate instruction based on student understanding, and efficiently assess and record student knowledge. See examples of how teachers can use these tools to make learning visible and take learning to a deeper level using quality questioning strategies during instruction.
Dottie Coven - Dottie has a Masters in Teaching and taught elementary school for 13 years. Dottie has worked as a consultant and technology trainer since 1992 and joined CIM Technology Solutions Group as they expanded into the Western Region in 2007.

Creating a Positive School Climate
I have served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, teacher association president, department head, assistant principal, high school principal, and district superintendent. While in these positions, I have maintained that a positive school climate is of utmost importance in the school improvement process. When challenging people to change and improve, the climate in which change occurs is vital to the success of the endeavor. In my presentation, we will discuss the four components that affect a positive school climate. The presentation is geared towards secondary schools, but it is applicable K-12. The belief in these four components has enabled Northview High School in Grand Rapids to receive the National Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Award while Douglas Elementary School in Saugatuck and Lakewood High School in Lake Odessa also receive the State of Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Award during my tenure as an administrator with these three school districts.
