Dennis Desmarais has been a fixture at other Michigan Summer Institutes for the past 10 years. His observations and experiences as a teacher and administrator for the past thirty plus years have made us acutely aware of the communicating aspects of teaching. From Dennis we learn that teaching is more than classroom objectives and are reminded of the qualities of the best teachers he has observed.

|
Marilyn Lane has been a classroom teacher, a school principal and Associate Professor at the University of Santa Clara, where she was responsible for student teachers. She held the positions of President of the California Association for the Gifted (an organization with over 5,000 members), Director of the California Center for Self-Esteem, and Vice-President of the National Association for Self-Esteem. She has authored curriculum materials on self-esteem, behavior management, and education of the gifted for parents and educators and is coauthor of the book Parenting With Purpose: Developing Children With Values and Vision. She has also presented at conferences and workshops for teachers throughout the U.S. and in ten different countries.
